Bed wedges and support mattresses: what to check before ordering

Compare the listed bed wedge, foam mattress and alternating pressure mattress system, then confirm size, setup and insurance requirements.

A bed cushion and a mattress are different requests

Start with the type of support your clinician recommended. A bed wedge is a positioning cushion. A foam mattress replaces a mattress, while a powered alternating pressure system includes air cells and a control unit. They have different dimensions and setup requirements.

Medrax currently lists three bed support options: a DMI Ortho leg elevation wedge, a Geo Mattress Pro RP foam mattress with a raised perimeter, and a Drive Med Aire alternating pressure and low air loss mattress system. These are separate products, not interchangeable choices or a package sold together.

Check the exact size and what is included

The listed DMI wedge is 6 inches high, 20 inches wide and 24 inches deep. Its cover is removable for cleaning. The listed Geo Mattress Pro RP is 80 inches long, 35 inches wide and 6 inches high. Read the measurements on the specific listing because a product family can contain several sizes.

The Drive Med Aire system is listed at 36 inches wide, 80 inches long and 8 inches high, with a control pump and a manufacturer weight capacity of 350 lb. Confirm the complete system contents, bed frame compatibility and setup arrangements before ordering. A photograph of a mattress does not mean a bed frame is included.

Plan for delivery and use

Have the bed frame dimensions and the name of any existing support surface ready. Ask Medrax what is supplied, what needs assembly and whether setup or delivery is part of the arrangement. For a powered surface, confirm the electrical requirements, control unit and instructions for responding to alarms.

Your care team should choose the support surface and give you its positioning and care instructions. Follow the instructions supplied for the exact model rather than copying settings from another mattress. Discuss any change to the prescribed surface with your clinician.

  • Bed frame dimensions and compatible mattress size
  • Manufacturer capacity and included components
  • Delivery, setup, cleaning and operating instructions

Review coverage before confirming an order

Medicare requires prior authorization for certain pressure reducing support surfaces. When that requirement applies, the supplier and treating provider submit the documentation for review before the item is provided. This does not mean every bed wedge or mattress qualifies for payment.

Medrax offers insurance billing across its catalog and operates as an out of network supplier. Coverage, authorization and your expected cost depend on the specific plan, product and documentation. Submit a review request to discuss the item you need. If you prefer to pay directly, ask for a cash quote that includes any delivery or setup charges.
